Abstract

Abstract INTRODUCTION I first met Alfred, my great uncle, in 1980 soon after he had completed his memoirs. I knew of him and his brother Emile, my grandfather, and some of their story but they only became part of my life after I returned from working overseas determined to complete my training as a surveyor and gain my registration. In a strange way my decision to sit for the Board of Surveyors exams brought me closer to both Alfred and Emile, my personal and professional forebears.
