Abstract

Summary Emil Hultmark (1872–1943), art historian, collector, donor and patron of the arts Emil Hultmark may be regarded as unique in Swedish cultural life. He combined important work as an art historian not only with the creation of one of the largest and most remarkable private art collections in Sweden, but also with the construction of an archive of Swedish artists and art craftsmen unparalleled in its extent, together with a library containing almost all that has been written about Swedish art. After studies at the university of Upsala from 1892–1897, Hultmark spent nine years combining travels in England, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland with studies at the university of Berlin, where Wofflin and Goldschmidt were his teachers, and those of Vienna and Bern, where he defended a thesis on Carl Fredric von Breda in 1906.
