Abstract

The study in front of you is a part of a many year research of the author about the Russian emigration in Pirot and it brings new facts relating to biographies of Russian painters who lived and created in Pirot in the period between the wars. At the same time, the study represents a contribution to the research of history of painting in Pirot which showed its first forms and outcomes after the Russian emigrants had come to the town. The first educated and academic painters in Pirot were Russians who were primarily educators but had already created a substantial number of works of art, part of which is kept today in the museum Ponisavlje, churches in Pirot and private collections as well. We are discovering the pioneer phase in the development of art in Pirot and its surrounding areas through biographies of five Russian painters.
