Abstract

It is estimated that about 18.2 medical occurrences per million commercial aviation passengers occur annually worldwide. The characteristics of the cabin environment have an overall physiological and functional impact that influences onboard emergencies and their approach. In-flight intervention is essentially based on crew action, first aid equipment and potential support from volunteers and/or ground-based guidance. The equipment available on board and the context and duties of the doctor who volunteers to help assist the ill passenger are discussed. To facilitate the performance of the volunteer doctor, a pictorial mnemonic and an offline application are suggested.
