Abstract

The trinational island of Borneo is facing several new challenges, including the planned construction of Indonesia’s new capital city, political tensions between Malaysia’s federal government and its states of Sabah and Sarawak and economic concerns in Brunei. While some multilateral platforms for regional and sub-regional security cooperation exist, none focuses on pan-Borneo security challenges, which will probably become more pressing during the current decade.
