Abstract

Living organisms are capable of synthesizing a fascinating array of highly complex and unusual chemical substances. Their rich structural and stereochemical characteristics make them ideal templates for development of novel molecular leads for therapeutic purposes. Natural products are thus playing a key role in global health and economy. Pakistan and other developing countries have unbroken traditions of the use of plants and other natural products as remedies in their folk systems. However, many of these plants are still unexplored for their chemical and pharmacological profile. Furthermore, the systemic scientific research on folk medicine is also essential for the development of Pakistan's healthcare system. Our group has been engaged in the systemic phytochemical investigation of the medicinal plants for the last several decades. Based on the ethnomedicinal information, we selected several medicinal plants for bioassay-guided phytochemical investigations, which resulted in the identification of a large number of bioactive constituents.
