Abstract
Certification of FT professionals is on the rise. IT professionals use certification to get ahead while employers and clients use it as a pre-screening tool for hiring new employees and advancing currently employed IT professionals. With the rise in the number of certifications, many new issues have emerged. First, the difference between the professional certification and proprietary certification has added fuel to the debate over whether IT is a profession or a trade. Second, the certification craze has led to the birth of internal certification protocols. Lastly, certification has become a tool to gain acceptance for new IT products. These three issues impact IT in a variety of ways.
