Abstract

The are many exciting and emerging health care technologies for space medicine. One new research effort promoting and supporting the development of such technologies is the Smart Medical Systems (SMS) team of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI). The team plans to work collaboratively with other research groups within the NSBRI and NASA, and within the larger academic, industrial and government communities to develop an intelligent, integrated medical system to assist in the delivery of quality health care for space travel, including exploration class missions. Research topics to be supported by the SMS team tentatively include (a) novel medical and surgical techniques, (b) novel sensor development, (c) advanced drug synthesis and delivery systems, (d) robotic medical assistance, (e) automated medical data systems and (f) automated decision support and training. An overview of the NSBRI, the rationale behind the formation of the SMS team, some of the emerging technologies, and the opportunities and challenges are outlined in this
