Abstract

The influence of policy on emergency nursing suggests a need for more nurses to become actively involved in policy arenas. A recent column in this space offered a firsthand account of one emergency nurse who left emergency nursing to journey into the policy world.1 However, the clinical practice of emergency nursing itself provides nurses with unique opportunities to develop skills that are essential for policy-related work. This column describes some of those “hidden” policy skills and how they can be applied in policy settings.
