Abstract

Outcomes research, a type of clinical research, focuses on determining whether interventions performed in clinical practice actually work. The techniques applied in clinical trials determine whether an intervention works in a controlled research setting (treatment efficacy). However, the goal of outcomes research is to determine whether an efficacious intervention can work in the less-controlled setting of ‘real-world’ practice (treatment effectiveness).
