Martin Scorsese's biopic of Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio) presents its subject in two modes. “Go” mode is thrilling—Hughes will make a snap decision to buy an airline, or break an aeronautical record, or reshoot a whole silent film (Hell's Angels), this time with speech. In “go” mode he doesn't ask “Can I?”; he doesn't so much as check with his accountant—after all what's a few more million? —he just acts. Forward motion comes in huge bounds. He's a fast-living visionary. He flies. He crashes.
