Abstract

Two methods of emergency contraception are currently available in the UK: oral emergency contraception (levonelle and ellaOne) and the copper intrauterine device (IUD). Time limit for use differs between the various methods, and this can be useful in determining which option is most appropriate. Most women are aware that a pill formulation of emergency contraception is available, but they are less aware of the IUD option. Being able to advise on a suitable form of emergency contraception relies upon the nurse undertaking a detailed assessment that should not only include an extensive review of the patient’s medical history and pharmacy, but also consider the patient’s values and beliefs.
