Abstract

SUMMARY Emergency airway management is one of the most challenging tasks facing anesthesiologists, surgeons, and emergency room personnel. A number of iatrogenically created problems can be avoided by performing a thorough evaluation of the airway in all patients presenting for surgery. A fully stocked emergency airway cart should be immediately available in all areas of the hospital, especially the operating and emergency rooms. General anesthesia and neuromuscular-blocking drugs should be avoided if at all possible in cases of anticipated difficult intubation. Anesthesiologists must play a leadership role and communicate effectively with operating room and emergency room personnel when confronted with these challenging problems.
