Abstract

This paper presents findings of a series of experiments on seed emergence and regrowth from root fragments of Rumex crispus and Rumex obtusifolius. R. crispus and R. obtusifolius gave 100% emergence in the growth cabinet either from seed or root fragments weighing 2.5 g or 5 g. Shoots emerged quicker from root fragments of both species than from seeds. Growth from 5 g root fragments of R. obtusifolius was significantly better than from seeds or 2.5 g fragments, and better than R. crispus seedlings emerging either from seed or root fragments. In the glasshouse, regrowth only took place from the top section of the root in both species and there was no difference in emergence from 2.5 or 5 g fragments of either species. The findings from these experiments contribute to understanding of the regrowth of Rumex particularly from root fragments which can be implemented to improve control practices.
