Abstract

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) refers to the systematic application of practices and environmental supports to promote social behaviour change and includes teaching selected skills to improve the likelihood of behavioural success across settings (OSEP & Sugai et al., 2000). This article describes the emergence of PBS as an alternative to previously used aversive behaviour change strategies and the critical features of PBS are explained. Next, discussion of the range of practices, such as antecedent interventions, positive consequences, and functional behavioural assessment, within PBS is provided. Finally, example applications of PBS principles in schools, early childhood, and alternative settings are included.
