Abstract
Over the years professionals in the energy and controls industries have done a great deal of soul searching about communications with automation or Energy Management and Control Systems (EMCS). Out of this process came an industry-wide demand, which may be summed up in one word: STANDARDIZATION. To date EMCS users have been required to support a front end for each manufacturer’s EMCS that they purchased. This meant that a user had to learn the necessary language and methods for interface with that particular system, as well as physically maintain the hardware.
