Abstract

The embryology ofScleria foliosa A. Rich. is described and several features have been recorded for the first time in the family. The endosperm having both micropylar and chalazal haustoria and embryo with characteristic cotyledon bearing papillate outgrowths are unique features noted in this taxon. The epicotylary and cotyledonary sectors are adjacently placed and occupy a terminal position on the embryonic axis. Taxonomic implications of the embryological findings with particular reference to the problem of circumscription ofScleria are discussed.
