Abstract

The Common Core State Standards increase both the number of concepts covered in core courses and the scope of those concepts. With insufficient time for students to reach subject mastery, and amid controversy accompanying the adoption of the standards, teachers are hesitant to embrace the new standards. Acknowledging that textbooks are not the curriculum, teachers struggle to search for meaningful ways to accomplish their curricular goals. Integrating topics and standards into thoughtfully designed and engaging project-based units framed in career-oriented and other real-world themes give students the meaningful challenges needed to be career-ready problem-solvers, thinkers, and creators upon graduation.
