  • Changes in anemia prevalence over time were based on data from eleven countries; nine that had anemia data for two consecutive DHS surveys and two (Nepal and Philippines) that had prevalence data from previous nationally representative surveys. The number of countries included in the crosscountry comparisons depended on the data available from DHS surveys through 2008.This number was 34 for Antenatal care (ANC) use comparisons, 33 for maternal iron and folic acid supplementation coverage, 16 for use of anti-malarials in pregnancy, 18 for bednet use, and 13 for use of de-worming medicines during pregnancy

  • To estimate use of malaria prophylaxis during pregnancy, the DHS question “During this pregnancy did you take any drugs to keep you from getting malaria?” was used. This information is obtained from women who had a live birth within two years preceding the DHS survey
