Abstract

This paper demonstrates how infrastructure manager Network Rail and its supply chain are working collaboratively to integrate permanent works and temporary works design and execution to improve safety, reduce error, improve efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint. The work is part of Network Rail’s ‘health and safety by design’ initiative, which aims to eliminate or reduce risks during design development for construction, operation and maintenance activities. The paper will directly benefit civil engineers using temporary works on Britain’s railway network, but it can also be applied across the international building and infrastructure sector.
