Abstract

A computer exchange control system has been designed to fulfil the specific requirements of the Brighton Polytechnic Computer Centre. This project raised various software issues that are common to a wide range of embedded applications. Some of these issues are reviewed in the paper, in particular the creation of a multitasking environment, I/O methods, timing and synchronization, debugging and bootstrapping. Before the software aspects are examined, the application and system structure are described in some detail. The role and function of the embedded microprocessor system and its interactions with the rest of the system are discussed.
