Abstract
A intensa integração económica mundial das últimas décadas veio aumentar as trocas comerciais entre os diversos países. No entanto, ainda existem barreiras que dificultam a realização das trocas comerciais. Vários estudos confirmaram já que a variável língua influencia a escolha de parceiros internacionais, uma vez que pode aumentar ou diminuir os custos da transação. Examinamos a relação entre as exportações portuguesas e a língua dominante no país de destino, analisando também a influência da pertença à UE ou ao Mercosul. Concluímos que a proximidade linguística desempenha um papel importante na escolha de parceiros comerciais estrangeiros, tal como o facto de pertencer à UE.

Não é só a partilha de uma língua comum que pode atuar como facilitador das relações comerciais entre parceiros de países distintos, a proximidade linguística, ou seja, o facto de duas línguas partilharem muitos traços em comum (como o português e o espanhol, por exemplo) faz com que seja mais fácil os falantes de uma das línguas aprenderem a outra, o que terá também repercussões no comércio internacional.
