Abstract

Abstract Both the homogeneous and the inhomogeneous heat equations have a number of geometric and analytic properties which extend their interest beyond the problems of thermodynamics. The geometric properties arise because the equations reflect the physical observation that heat flows from warmer regions to colder regions. The analytic properties are a consequence of the smoothness of the heat redistribution process.
