Abstract

Abstract The corrosion characteristics of evaporated aluminium films in distilled water at room temperature and at elevated temperatures were studied in situ by ellipsometry. The oxidation behaviour of the aluminium films on intermittent immersion in distilled water with intervening periods of drying was also investigated. The growth characteristics of the oxide layers for the above cases were determined, and the results are interpreted on the basis of the particular mechanism that controls the overall process; this is dependent on both time and temperature.
