Abstract
Abstract We expect the licensing and identification conditions on ellipsis in English noun phrases motivated in Chapter Three to extend cross-linguistically, under the assumption that such conditions are universals rather than language particular principles. In this chapter I show that this claim can in fact be substantiated for both German and French noun phrases, though the agreement systems in noun phrases in these languages differ in certain ways from English. We also find that in these languages there is reason to believe that definite noun phrases are best analyzed as DP, with indefinite noun phrases as NUMP.
