Abstract

As Director of WHO's Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health, 2015 is looming ever larger on Elizabeth Mason's horizon as the deadline for Millennium Development Goal 4 on reducing under-5 mortality approaches. Yet Mason is already looking further into the future. The Child Survival Call to Action: A Promise Renewed challenged countries to set their sights on ending preventable child deaths by 2035. As part of that plan, Mason and her colleagues launch the WHO/UNICEF Integrated Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhoea this month, which aims to dramatically reduce child deaths caused by these two illnesses by 2025.
