Abstract

In this essay I would like to explore the visionary writings of Elisabeth of Schonau (1129-1164) and to show how her work on Saint Ursula's martyrdom in Cologne, the Liber revelationum Elisabeth de sacro exercitu virginum Coloniensium (The book of Revelations on the sacred army of Cologne), written after 1156 and very widely read among her contemporaries, can illustrate some uses of visionary authority in the context of the cult of the saints and their relics.
