Abstract

Presents an obituary for Eliot S. Hearst (1932-2018). Educated in psychology at Columbia University, Hearst received his Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude in 1953, his Master of Arts in 1954, and his doctoral degree in 1956, under William N. "Nat" Schoenfeld. From 1958 to 1964, Hearst was a Senior Experimental Psychologist at the Clinical Neuropharmacology Research Center, a joint unit of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Saint Elizabeth's Hospital. Focused on conditioning, his experimental work included pharmacological, neuroanatomical, genetic, and biochemical correlates of behavior as well. Hearst was appointed professor of psychology in 1965 at the University of Missouri. In 1966, he was awarded his first NIMH grant, beginning a string of 22 annual renewals. Moving to Indiana University (IU) 5 years later, he taught courses in animal behavior, learning theory, and history and systems of psychology. An approachable yet demanding mentor, he patiently guided hundreds of students. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).
