Abstract
A variable speed DC motor drive using pulse width modulated (PWM) waveforms will emit dominant tonal acoustic noise in addition to the normal motor running noise. These tonal components occur at harmonics of the PWM switching frequency and greatly increase the subjective annoyance of the resulting motor noise. A novel technique of eliminating these tonal noise components by randomly dithering the PWM switching frequency is proposed. The effect of this dithering is to replace the tonal components with broadband noise which is subjectively less annoying.
