Abstract

Closing resistors for breakers are used to suppress switching overvoltages, but their shortcomings make it a long-standing goal to eliminate closing resistors. In this paper, different arresters are evaluated as alternative measures to eliminate closing resistors in 1000-kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) systems. Two kinds of arresters with lower residual voltage are introduced to suppress switching overvoltages. The performance of these arresters under different operation conditions is also analyzed to ensure the safety of arresters. It is shown that closing resistors in UHV systems can be eliminated after applying proper arresters and adopting certain distributing measures.
