Abstract

Eleven International Congresses of Dermatology have been held from 1889 to the present time. The Twelfth Congress will be held in Washington, D.C., in September, 1962. The proceedings of the Congresses were published and are available to those who have the urge to peruse them, and a rewarding experience is in store for those who do. In the proceedings of the First Congress the names of the members of the organizing committees as well as the rules established are given, but I could find no mention of how or with whom the idea of an International Congress originated. There had been previous international congresses, but they were more of a general nature, with sections for the specialties. For example, an International Congress of Medicine was held in London in 1871. Hutchinson presented a number of dermatological cases.
