Abstract

Renal function in 23 patients with hydronephrosis was studied with a split-function technique. In addition to reduction of renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate, the predominant dysfunction was high fractional excretion of magnesium, which showed positive correlation with raised intrapelvic pressure. Determination of urinary magnesium excretion would appear to be helpful for the early detection of impending parenchymal failure.
