Abstract

The word “geometry” comes from the Greek words gê, meaning “earth,” and metron, méaning “to measure.” Thus, etymologically, the term “metric geometry” is redundant and the term “nonmetric geometry” is ridiculous. In modern usage, however, nonmetric geometry refers to the parts of geometry one can study with-out using the concept of measure, while metric geometry refers to the geometry one can do using the measure concept. The purpose of this article is to explain the concept of measure and to illustrate some of its applications.
