Abstract

It is argued that elementary quanta of an open system are determined by the spectral decomposition of a thermodynamic Hamiltonian, not an ordinary Hamiltonian. Recently observed spectral shifts in semiconductors irradiated with two simultaneous laser pulses may be manifestation of this fundamental role of the thermodynamic Hamiltonian.
