Abstract

Approximate methods for determining from the total field anomaly the depth to a point dipole and a line of dipoles were developed by Smellie (1967) and have frequently been applied in the interpretation of aeromagnetic data. The technique, involving the use of various characteristic curves, is very useful for interpretation in high magnetic latitudes but loses its applicability at latitudes lower than about 30 degrees. For this reason, a modification to the method presented by Smellie is proposed for application in surveys conducted near the magnetic equator.
