Abstract
Concentrations of heavy elements in air were determined at a rural site in Belgium during periods of very low pollution levels. These low levels were appraised by means of a sensitive SO 2 monitor. Observed mean background concentrations are high or very high as compared with levels observed in remote or very remote areas of continental zones. However, extrapolating the observed concentrations to very low sulfur levels gives results comparable to those observed in remote areas.
