Abstract

With the galvanic cellNi, NiO/ZrO2 (+MgO)/CUliq, (+Odissolved) it is possible to measure the activity of oxygen in liquid copper. Using this cell one can follow the de-oxidation of liquid copper with high precision, as shown experimentally. Employing magnesium for de-oxidation, oxygen reacts to MgO; the emf of the cell is a measure of the amount of magnesium in solution as well. Experimentally, the solubility of oxygen in liquid copper was measured.
