Abstract

A method for the coprecipitation of tin with hafnium hydroxide followed by electrothermal atomisation atomic absorption spectrometric determination is described. Hafnium hydroxide coprecipitates quantitatively 0.1–10 µg of tin from 50–400 ml of samples solution at pH 5.0–12.0. The atomic absorbance of tin is increased about 4-fold in the presence of hafnium. The calibration graph is linear from 4 to 400 ng ml–1 of tin and passes through the origin. Twenty-seven matrix ions were tested and found not to produce serious interference. This method is applicable to the analysis of water samples for tin. The characteristics of a graphite tube impregnated with hafnium were also examined and some advantages of this tube were demonstrated.
