Abstract

Low energy ion detection in space is one of the most important interests of space exploration. An accurate calibration of this type of instrument is necessary to ensure the effectiveness and scientificness of the obtained data. And the ion beam system is the most critical equipment in a calibration facility. In this study, an initial ion beam is generated by a Kaufman ion source and a set of electrostatic lenses is designed to expand and attenuate the ion beam. The simulation results indicate that the beam density of the ion beam can be attenuated by more than three orders of magnitude. This design reduces the space requirements and usage costs of the entire calibration system, and provides a guidance for the design of a calibration systems at the energy range of 100–1000 eV.
