Abstract

The modal equations of motion of an electrostatically forced axisymmetric shell are derived. It is shown that the modes of vibration are coupled by the applied electrical field and that resonances and parametric instabilities can be excited when this field is periodic. These instabilities also provide the means by which the shell can be driven as a stable mechanical oscillator.
