Abstract

ObjectivePredicting postoperative visual outcome in patients with complex tractional retinal detachment and severe visual impairment. Material and methodsElectroretinogram was performed preoperatively to patients who un-derwent pars plana vitrectomy 23 gauge and phacoemulsification with lens implantation. ResultsNine eyes of nine patients were followed for six months. No patient achieved improvement in postoperative visual acuity. In three patients (33.4%) at six months, visual worsening occurred, six patients (66.66%) remained with preoperative visual acuity and postoperative at six months without changes. In all patients, responses were abolished in the standardized preoperative electroretinogram. ConclusionsElectroretinogram as preoperative examination in patients with diabetic traction retinal detachment and poor visual acuity predicts poor post-operative visual outcome.
