Abstract

The Zr electrorefining process in chloride-based molten salts is demonstrated for the purpose of cladding hull waste treatment. The addition of fluoride ions modifies the electrochemical behavior of Zr, resulting in a single-step reduction process. The morphological feature of electrorefined Zr in LiCl-KCl-LiF-ZrCl4 baths is revealed to be dendritic, compared to that in LiCl-KCl-ZrCl4 baths. The crystallinity of the recovered Zr is also enhanced by the addition of fluoride ions.
