Abstract

Electrophoretic lactae dehydrogenase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH, EC 1.1.1.37) polymorphism were compared among populations of the threespine and ninespine sticklebacks found in the River Vistula and Gulf of Gdańsk. LDH and MDH enzymes were assayed from the skeletal and heart muscles and the eye. The results indicated some allele frequency differences between saline and freshwater populations of the threespine stickleback in the Mdh-A locus. Allele a' appeared only in the Dead Vistula and Gdańsk Gulf populations. MDH polymorphism in the ninespine stickleback was greater than in the threespine stickleback. Both Ldh loci A and C were monomorphic in the threespine stickleback, whereas in the ninespine stickleback the Ldh-A locus was polymorphic.
