Abstract

Purified particles of fourteen cucumovirus isolates were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Five isolates of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), five of soybean stunt virus (SSV), three of peanut stunt virus (PSV) and one of chrysanthemum mild mottle virus (CMMV) were used. Each isolate gave only one main peak. The five CMV isolates had the same particle mobility. SSV, PSV and CMMV isolates had mobilities which were different from one another and from CMV. Differences were also found between isolates of PSV and SSV. The usefulness of electrophoretic analysis of virus particles for virus detection and identification is discussed.
