Abstract

This paper performed an experimental study on the electro-osmotic chemical treatment (ECT) for marine clayey soil using CaCl2 solution. The soil samples were collected from the southern region in Liaodong Peninsula, Dalian city. The study focused on the use of ECT to improve mechanical and physical properties of soil. A series of laboratory experiments with the self-designed equipment were conducted to analyze the feasibility of ECT using CaCl2 solution. The experimental results demonstrated that the ECT is an effective method to decrease the water content and increase the bearing capacity of the marine clayey soil. Furthermore, the average undrained shear strength of the marine clayey soil increased with the ETC technique. The bearing capacity of the treated soil was improved up to 450%~700%. The energy consumption and the electrode corrosion were reduced through adding Polyvinylchlorid (PVC) pipe to the electrodes. The electro-osmotic chemical treatment technique using CaCl2 solution proposed in this paper has the potential to strengthen marine clayey soil foundations and to increase the economic efficiency and feasibility of improvement of marine clayey soil.
