Abstract

Electrooptic effects in a free-standing film of ferroelectric liquid crystal have been studied. The threshold field of the electrooptic effect in the free-standing film is negligible compared with that in a sandwich cell. The response time of the electrooptic effect in the free-standing film is much shorter than that in a sandwich cell. These effects have been interpreted in terms of the strong influence of the glass surface of the sandwich cell.
