Abstract

Electron-spin resonance has been used to study the singly ionized donor states of cation-substitutional lead, ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{3+}$(6${s}^{1}$), tin, ${\mathrm{Sn}}^{3+}$(5${s}^{1}$), and germanium, ${\mathrm{Ge}}^{3+}$(4${s}^{1}$) in CdTe. A linear combination of atomic orbitals and molecular orbitals analysis of the $^{125}\mathrm{Te}$ ligand hyperfine-structure data reveals that in all cases the unpaired electron is strongly localized within the first Te-ligand shell around the group-IV impurity. From this it is concluded that cation-substitutional Pb, Sn, and Ge form deep donor states in CdTe.
