Abstract
A theoretical study is made of 'elastic' scattering of fast electrons by a CO molecule (in the 1 Sigma + state) in the presence of an infrared laser field taken in the dipole approximation. The Floquet method is used to describe the laser-molecule interaction while the Volkov solution is taken for the laser-projectile interaction. The dressed states of the molecule in the presence of the infrared laser field are obtained by solving the equation of motion of an explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonian. Selected calculations are performed of differential and total cross sections of photon absorptions for a parallel geometry (the photon polarization vector is taken parallel to the initial electron momentum). Finally, the effect of laser intensity and frequency on the cross section is investigated and discussed in detail.
