Abstract
ABSTRACT Not only are high-frequency electronic ballasts for high intensity discharge (HID) lamps technologically feasible and economically justifiable, but their use also results in immense energy savings. The utilization of electronic ballasts allows HID systems (which consume ≥4 percent of our nation's energy) to be even more energy efficacious. An electronic ballast can change the entire operational paradigm for HID lighting. Using this technology, each of the many delimiters (lumen depreciation, color shift, starts per day, hot re-strike times, and lack of controllability) that have plagued HID can be minimized if not totally removed. The impact of electronic ballasts on HID lamps cannot be overstated. Government stakeholders should mandate electronic ballast usage for every HID lamp, just as is now done for fluorescent.
