Abstract

The European Union aims to reduce the number of victims of traffic accidents in half by the year 2010. In particular, new electronic assistance and safety systems, for which extensive research programs are being set up, should contribute to achieving this goal. Through its participation, Siemens VDO is a major contributor to the success of the research work. In the next few years, Siemens will equip many assistance and safety systems with components or introduce them on to the market independently. This article introduces several safety technologies, for example vehicle-based systems such as blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and tire-pressure monitoring. Another category includes infrastructure-based technologies such as the automatic emergency caller E-Call and car-to-car communication.
